Finals

The ATP World Tour Finals ended with a matchup of the two best players in the world, and Novak Djokovic was able to come out on top with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Rafael Nadal.
This is the second win in a row at this prestigious tournament for Djokovic, who now has three year-end championships in his career. It is his seventh title of the year, and he extends his winning streak to 17 matches dating back to the U.S. Open finals.
Nadal is still yet to win at this event and has lost in his two final appearances.
Still, the story coming into this match was the rivalry and overall talent of these two stars. As Rachel Wyse of Sky Sports notes, the 39 battles between them is a record.

Nadal, at the end of the year reached 14 finals out of a possible 17, won ten titles compiled a 75-7 record for the season, and of course ended the year as no.1. That haul of ten titles included 2 Grand Slams and 5 Masters 1000’s as well. Few people achieve that haul in their entire career let alone a year. Words are not enough to explain how monumental an achievement this is.

Hopefully, we can look forward to a great 2014 and a great Australian Open. Till then, VAMOS! We will see you in Melbourne.

A look back at Rafa's run at the ATP World Tour Finals

Round Robin:

Round 1: Rafael Nadal def. David Ferrer 6-3 6-2

Nadal earned his first victory of the RR format and is just one victory away from clinching the year end no.1. Vamos!

Round 2: Rafael Nadal def. Stanislas Wawrinka 7-6(5) 7-6(6)

When he finally triumphed, Nadal threw his hands up in relief and joy. He knew what ending the year end as no.1 meant after the pains of the previous year and it showed!

Round 3: Rafael Nadal def. Tomas Berdych 6-4 1-6 6-3

After an epic point on match point, Nadal triumphed and raised his arms. He tops the group and now faces the winner between Federer and Del Potro. Vamos!

Semifinals: Rafael Nadal def. Roger Federer 7-5 6-3

The muted celebration showed the respect Nadal had for Federer. Always humble, that’s what separates him from the rest. He now stands 75-6 for the season, with one match remaining.

Finals: Novak Djokovic def. Rafael Nadal 6-3 6-4

A disappointing end to the season for Nadal’s fans, as he bowed out to Djokovic in straight sets.

Nadal didn’t play to his full potential and it wasn’t the classic everyone expected.
Nadal put up a valiant effort in the final game, down two championship points, but even he couldn’t deny the deserving champion. A not so great end to a great, incredible year for Nadal, but no doubt he’ll be back. Vamos!

Pros:

Nadal had improved on his serving and his backhand game, from Paris. He was probably serving his best at the indoors ever, till the finals.

Cons:

Nadal strayed too far behind the baseline during his finals. There was not too much aggression, and he missed a lot of forehand. Something he should look to fine tune in time for the Australian open.

Up next:

Nadal plays a few exhibition matches this month, one against Novak on clay as well, let’s see how that goes, shall we? :-)
